Best New Years Hair Resolutions

The New Year always brings about a feeling of improvement. Whether it be a life change, career change, or just change in general, we are always seeking to improve ourselves with the New Year.

I thought I would compile a list of small changes that everyone can make in order to have amazing hair to look forward to in 2017.

Some of these tips can be added into a weekly routine to remind yourself that not only is good hair important, but taking time to pamper yourself is a healthy habit to stay happy and healthy yourself!

1. Eating Healthy

Healthy hair and a beautiful you in general start with what goes into your body. Including more of these foods into your diet with not only make your hair happy, but your body as well!

1. Salmon- Sources of B vitamins and Omega 3 Fatty Acids do wonders for your hair!

2. Avocado- Another source of healthy fat for anyone who isn't a Fish lover.

3. Leafy Greens- Good sources of Vitamin E. Spinach is also a great green food to add into your diet for a bit of Vitamin A

4. Lentils- contain Biotin, Zinc, Protien

5. Eggs/Nuts- Another great source of Vitamin B and Biotin. These also contain great sources of protien (from which our hair is made)

6. Whole Grains- will help you to gain and maintain a beautiful shiny mane of hair. This includes Oatmeal, Brown Rice, and Quinoa. These foods contain Niacin, pantothenic acid, folic acid, B6, and B12 which are important for stimulating the hair follicle.

2. Oil Your Scalp

A healthy scalp leads to healthy hair. Scalp oiling has been passed down through generations as a secret to having healthy and beautiful hair. It is easy to do at home and can be left on over night and washed out in the morning. Gently warm the oils to get an added effect!

My favourite oils to use are...

1. Lavender Oil - Best for treating dry scalp and helping improve hair growth. For more information and how to use or make your own Essential Oil mixture click HERE

2. Rosemary Oil- Also great for hair growth and dry skin. Rosemary oil has other great benefits, including calming, and improving memory. For more information on how to use Rosemary Oils click HERE

3. Coconut Oil- Great for all hair types, coconut oil also helps against Dandruff and flaky scalp. I like to apply this as a mask for the lengths and ends on the weekend when I do the house cleaning. Warm up the oil under hot water and spread liberally through your hair. Leave it to sit for 30 to 60 minutes. Before washing it out, you can apply some shampoo to your dry hair to make it easier to properly wash everything out in the shower.

3. Proper Conditioning and Treatments

Making a routine of conditioning and treating your lengths to extra moisture is one of the best ways to see quick results.

Many people feel that applying a conditioner or rinse takes too much time, but it doesn't have to. A small change in your shower routine can help with this.

Try washing your hair, applying your conditioner or mask, then washing your body. The minute or so it takes to wash your face etc is all a regular rinse needs. Rinse it out when you are all finished and you are ready to get on with your day.

(If you still think it is too much work, reach for a good leave-in spray conditioner to minimise any tugging while combing etc)

If you want to apply a mask, I always advise my clients that it is a great time saver if you apply at the same time as shaving your legs. It is best to leave a mask on for at least 7 minutes.

4. Vitamins and Supplements

Before taking any kind of Supplement it is always advised to consult your doctor or a trusted health professional, but these 5 supplements can help you to see an improvement in your hair`s strength, shine, elasticity, and growth.

1. Biotin

2. Vitamin A

3. Vitamin E

4. Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)

5. Inositol

5. Proper Bedtime Routine

As many times as you have heard this, I am going to say it again. If you have long hair, the best way to keep it looking healthy and happy is to plait, braid, tie up your hair before going to bed.

The trick here is not to make it too tight; but keeping your hair together prevents any unnecessary rubbing and friction that could cause breakage.

I also like to add my favourite oil to the lengths before I braid my hair. This way you also have the benefit of an overnight treatment!

EXTRA TIPS

1. Switch your hair ties out for bobby pins or clips as much as possible. IF you have to use a rubber band, try not to tie your hair in the same place everyday. This can weaken the hair where it is always under pressure and cause unwanted breakage.
